Exhibit Team
Alexandra Cruickshank - Alex is the principal conceptualizer, writer, and photographer of the exhibit. For years, Alex has studied Frances and David’s ideas, translating their theory and practice into her classroom work. Her 2011 Boulder Ignite and TEDx presentations gave public voice to Alex’s compelling articulation of very complex theory. In collaboration with the team, Alex designed the conceptual structure of Cultivate the Scientist in Every Child, and led the creative components of the project. Alex has taught at Boulder Journey School since 2007, and looks forward to many more years of deepening and extending her expertise in the educational approaches articulated in the exhibit.
Dexter Lane – Dex has been a creative presence throughout the exhibit’s development. He discovered Frances and David Hawkins relatively recently, and has brought an “outsider’s” fresh perspective to various aspects of the project. Although not a teacher, Dex has included work with children at various points in his many years in social work. His years in copywriting and photography informed his consultative relationship to the exhibit.
Ellen Hall – Ellen is one of Hawkins Centers of Learning’s founding board members. A colleague and friend of Frances and David, Ellen was a frequent guest in the Hawkins home, and often joined the wide-ranging discussions for which they were famous. Ellen is also a Founder and Executive Director of Boulder Journey School in Boulder, Colorado, in which David and Frances’ educational theories are practiced daily. Her expertise in Early Child Education has earned her membership on many boards of directors, including Dimensions Educational Research Foundation, RAFT, and NAREA. She travels to study, and to deliver presentations worldwide.
Deborah Dumont – Deborah is a founding board member of Hawkins Centers of Learning. Her work in education reform, research and advocacy is deeply influenced by the thinking of Frances and David Hawkins. Throughout her career, Deborah has held leadership and consulting roles in a broad range of educational organizations. Her special focus is now on children most at risk. She is currently a trustee of a K-12 school, in the Hunts Point area of the South Bronx, which serves children in our country’s poorest congressional district. Deborah is also an elected school board member in New York State.
Christy Horber and Lisa Kornblith - Christy and Lisa, students at the Children, Youth and Environments Center for Community Engagement, University of Colorado Boulder, were referred by a friend of Hawkins Centers of Learning. They began the process of creating the exhibit’s design by immersing themselves in the philosophy of Frances and David. Inspired by their writings, Christy and Lisa worked with Marcel S. de Lang, their instructor, to develop the exhibit’s graphic design, and structure.
Marcel S. de Lange - Marcel is a Senior Instructor in the Children, Youth and Environments Center for Community Engagement, University of Colorado Boulder. He teaches courses and seminars around materials and systems, design studios, fabrication courses and digital design. Marcel brought his extensive expertise and creative vision to the exhibit project.
Julie Dye - As a parent of two daughters and as a child of educators, Julie has always been fascinated by how we teach and learn. She experienced first-hand how a Hawkins-based approach helped her children thrive and discover a love for exploring science and math. Julie has enthusiastically supported the Cultivate the Scientist in Every Child exhibit by establishing local partnerships and by helping with marketing and communication. Julie is particularly interested in how we increase diversity and encourage curiosity in STEM education by girls and in the Latino community.
